Jazz, musical form , often improvisational, developed by African Americans and influenced by both European harmonic structure and African rhythms. Though jazz is closely associated with blues and ragtime, one of the most important elements of jazz music is that it is improvisational music-well-known notes and lines are a starting point for musicians to develop unique songs around. The word jazz is a great word to use in imagery as it is fairly short and has interesting shapes.

The module aims to give students an introduction to ethnomusicology, surveying its history, methods, and methodologies; illustrating how ethnomusicology deals with music from around the world including classical, popular and traditional.
